Are you going on a vacation but you want your plants to be cared for while you are away? Here are some tips from Plant Mom.
If you are going out of town for a holiday vacation and you won’t be home for a while, you would not want to come home and see your plants all wilted and dry. Fortunately, there are ways to ensure that your plants get the needed water, light, and moisture even if you are away.
Make Sure the Plants are Clean
Before you leave for a vacation, make sure that the plants are clean. To clean the plant means to remove dead and wilted leaves from the stems and branches and from the soil. Wilting leaves will still absorb moisture and energy from the plant while rotting leaves on the soil will be a nest for insects and bacteria.
Give Plants a Thorough Soak
Before you leave, make sure that you give each plant a thorough soak in the water. This will help the roots become hydrated, in preparation for the days of no-water condition. The best way to soak the plants in water is to use a tub or basin, let the pot sit on the tub with water, and allow the soil to absorb the moisture. After an hour of soaking, drain the water from the tub and let the plant rest there for a while. After half an hour, bring back the plants to their designated spot. Make sure that no leftover water sits on the saucer.
Improve the Humidity Level in the Area
Before you leave, make sure that you provide the plants with proper humidity. Humidity is the key to a healthy plant. If you know that the place where the plants are kept is low in humidity, you can easily improve it by adding a pebble tray with water or by adding a humidifier in the room. Also, you can group the plants together according to light requirements. When they are together, they create their own natural humidity or moisture.
Entrust the Plants to Your Family or Friends
Before you leave, ask your family or friends if they can tend the plants for a while. They can help water the plants while you are away, but make sure that you give clear watering instructions, which depend on the types of plants or on the water requirement of the plants.
