How to Prune a Plant?

Tips and Guide to Trimming Your Plants

Plants need regular and timely trimmings and pruning to promote growth and to remove pest infestation. Leaves that are dead or dying also need to be removed from the plant. By doing so, the plant will have all the energy it needs to grow new roots and leaves.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to trim your plants and keep them clean, healthy, and pest-free.

Step 1: Prepare Your Trimming Tools

A pair of scissors or shears is the most ideal tool to use for plant trimming and pruning. Make sure that they are clean and disinfected before using them.

Step 2: Inspect the Plants

Pinpoint where the dried and dying leaves are located. If there are dead leaves on the soil, remove them too. Clean the soil from dead leaves to avoid attracting pests and bacteria.

Step 3: Use Tools Properly

Proper use of tools is vital in keeping the healthy growth of your plants. If you are using scissors or shears to cut the leaves infected by bacteria and pests, you will need to clean the blades first using alcohol. For leaves with brown or yellowing edges, the experts say that it is best to moisten the blades with water first before cutting the affected leaves.

Step 4: Cut Leaves Entirely Damaged at the Base

If leaves are entirely damaged, cutting them from the base of the leaves is the best way. It is proper to cut near the stem or soil to promote healthy growth and development of new leaves.

Step 5: Cut Only the Affected Area

If leaves are partially affected by drying or if brown or yellow tips on leaves are present, cut only the affected area.

Additional Tips from the Experts:

When pruning your plants, make sure that you handle the plant with extra care. The ideal way is to cut at least 20% of the leaves and never go more than that, or trim leaves in stages.

After trimming, your plant will look neat and nice. Water it thoroughly and let it drink to be healthy again.
